24 Albums of December - AH, VENICE - Mischief
How on earth are we supposed to select 24 albums representative of Fascinating Rhythm’s 2019? Trust us that it’s an unenviable task, but we’ve given it a good ol’ go. In my opinion this year has been a vintage one for music, so in truth we’d could have picked 100 or even 200 great records all worthy of inclusion. For example, we didn’t include releases by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Lizzo, Deerhunter, Steve Gunn, The National, black midi or Sacred Paws – whose 2019 album I’m still obsessed with. So, there’s a LOT of great stuff we didn’t include, but we’ve done our best to present a span of selections from every area of the store, including some great local and wider Canadian releases. Between now and Christmas Eve, we hope you enjoy the tracks we’ve put together for you.

20/ AH, VENICE – Mischief
Nanaimo’s Chris Thompson is a man of many talents. A singer, songwriter, producer, recording engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Chris is unarguably one of the pivotal figures of the city’s independent music scene. He is, of course, one-quarter of the legendary ‘gentleman’s techno’ outfit, Top Men, the drummer with FINE, and generally speaking, a maverick musician whose previous incarnations of Ah, Venice have included only three bass guitars, or else two clarinets and two saxophones. In other words, expect the unexpected from this particular outfit, a fact exemplified by Mischief, on which, after the folk-rock direction of 2015’s Go To Hell, Chris Thompson, the settled Ah, Venice lineup of Chris, Wren Beckley and Mercedes Courtoreille have produced an album self-described as “summertime driving rock about the daunting task of finding happiness in a terrible world.” Taken from it, here’s Learning to Dance Again.
