As of November 1, 2018, James Kasper has been hired on a 42-week contract as CHLY's Workshop and Summer Camp Coordinator to pass on radio broadcasting training and knowledge to community members and students, through a series of workshops in early 2019, as well as a summer media camp for youths in 2019 in July and August. This project is funding by the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) as part of their Radiometres Program.

James earned his broadcasting diploma from Western Academy (Saskatoon) in 2010, and he specializes in writing, voicing, and editing for radio. He founded the Vancouver Island Music Awards in 2002 and produced the gala for eleven years. In addition, he founded Mighty Speck Records in 2012, directing the label for six years. In 2016, he co-founded the inaugural Fraser Valley Music Awards with 101.7 CIVL Radio.

He is also a singer-songwriter and recording artist. James believes in the power and value of community while subscribing to an absurdist brand of humour. He is excited about this project and looks forward to connecting with as many people in the Nanaimo community as possible over the course of the next year.

As head of staff at CHLY 101.7FM, I am incredibly happy to have James at the station to see our CRFC grant project to completion. If you have any interest in participating in our future workshops as a general participant, or as a host, please reach out to me via email at jesse.woodward@chly.ca, and I will connect you with James.
