Our Programming

Locally Produced Programs

The majority of programming on CHLY is produced by local producers who are volunteers at CHLY. Some programming is produced in collaboration with Vancouver Island University, or other local non-profit organizations.

A Sense of Justice - Local politics, social issues, music and interviews. Wednesdays at 7 PM.

A Sound Constitution - Evidence based community health. Produced by VIU Nursing students for credit in their third and fourth years. Thursdays at 2 PM.

Act 3 - Act 3! The third stage of life. How will we make it the best stage of life? Planning, coping, thriving. Mondays at 1 PM.

Amadeus & Friends - Music of the Classical era, particularly W.A. Mozart. Tuesdays at 1 PM

AndFriends Radio - Disco remixed and groovy. Thursdays at 8 PM.

Apna Sur Sangeet (Punjabi Language) - Nanaimo Sikh community’s music, news and information. Sundays at 3 PM.

Ashta Made You A Mixtape - A mixtape curated by Ashta (formerly of Sweet and Sour Variety Hour) Friday at 9 PM

B-sides and Other Treats - B-Sides from bands you've heard of and bands you've never heard of. Tuesdays at 10 PM.

Blues at Night - Blues and blues-based music with a focus on local artists. At night. Fridays at 10 PM.

Blues Before Breakfast - Blues and blues-based music with a focus on local artists. In the Morning. Sundays at 10 AM.

Cheese and Crackers - Fun mix of indie & Americana with new release highlights. Saturday at 7 PM.

CHLY Overnight - An overnight mix of music new and old. Every day, in the very early morning.

Climate 911 - Environmental Talk through a local lens. Fridays at 10 AM.

Controlled Chaos - White noise is audio chaos. Music is the highest level of Controlled Chaos. Mostly Canadian, mostly new, all genres Thurdays at 10 PM

Doug Cox's Random Play - A musician's record collection on random play. Sundays at 8 PM.

Elevator Club - The program is a unique blend of old and new easy listening music featuring lush instrumentals, soothing vocals with a sprinkling of soft jazz. Sunday at 11 PM.

Fever 101.7FM - Soul, Funk, R&B, and Japanese City-Pop. Tuesdays at 5 PM.

Free Trampoline - Mix of rock, pop, techno, hip hop and alt-country. Wednesdays at 4 PM.

Golden Hour - A mix of rock, psychedelia, and more. Saturdays at 4 PM.

Groovin' with BBG - Hits and misses from the 50’s, 60’s (and some 70’s). Fridays at 6 PM.

Harbour City Beat - Spotlights Nanaimo and Vancouver Island music artists. Tuesdays at 8 PM.

Impending Loom - Acid jazz, varied musical selections, and banter. Mondays at 8 PM.

In the Red - Best rock of all ages with a heavy focus on Canadian music. Wednesdays at 8 PM.

Locals Only - Local independent rock, pop, and more. Saturdays at 6 PM.

Metal Mondays - Loud metal music. Mondays at 10 PM.

Music Without Borders - An eclectic mix of music from around the world. Friday at 7 AM.

Nash Holos Ukrainian Roots Radio (Ukranian Language) - Ukrainian news and global information. Wednesdays at 11 AM.

Party Platter - The best independent pop. Saturdays at 5 PM.

People First Radio* - People, the society, and issues related to health and wellness. Thursdays at 12 PM. Rebroadcast on Mondays at 3 PM.

Queerly Beloved - Music and interviews for LGBTQ2+ and their allies. Wednesdays at 6 PM.

Restless Radio - An eclectic mix of jams. Saturdays at 2pm

Risebridge Soundoff - Amplifying BIPOC voices, elevating harm reduction initiatives, and empowering the community through connection & awareness. Produced in collaboration with Risebridge. Tuesdays at Noon.

Road Poets  - Contemporary folk, country, bluegrass and Americana. Fridays at 8 PM.

Songwriters Circle - The art of songwriting with a strong focus on Nanaimo and area. Saturday at 12 PM.

The Boss - Late night dancehall and reggae-infused music. Mondays at Midnight.

The Canadian Philosophy Show - Philosophical discussions presented by the VIU Philosophy Club. Mondays at Noon

The Morning Fog - Two hours of jazz, blues & roots music to start your Thursday. Thursdays at 7 AM.

The Sweet Spot - The best in small band jazz Saturdays at 10 AM.

The VIU Meter - Catered to the eclectic ear, ranging from local to the international, a mix of indie rock, pop, hip-hop and electronic. Monday to Friday at 3PM.

Tuning Fork - Food and farm talk focused on permaculture. Thursdays at 7 PM.

Under the Fringe - A show about body positivity, burlesque and local arts/artists. Thursdays at 5 PM

Wellness Wednesday - A collective of different voices and viewpoints to inspire, entertain and inform on a variety of topics all related to achieving or maintaining wellness. Wednesday at 1 PM

What’s Next  - Nostalgic music with stories and reflections of ‘days gone by’. Mondays at 11 AM.

Wittster's Suprise - Surprise mixes from our resident Wittster. Sundays at 7 PM.

WorldVIU Radio - World music and conversations hosted by VIU International students. Friday at 11 AM

Your Money - A show to discuss all aspects of money and how it works. Thursdays at 11 AM.

Syndicated Programs

CHLY plays a variety of syndicated music, talk, and news programming from a variety of different sources from like other campus-community stations, and independent producers from Canada and beyond.

Alternative Radio - Public affairs, news and views often ignored in corporate media. Wednesdays at 2 PM.

Backspin - French electronic dance music. Sunday at 2AM.

Canadaland - News and Media Criticism from across Canada. Friday at 8 AM.

CanQueer - CanQueer is a weekly gay, bisexual, lesbian and queer, and trans program which looks at issues in the community. Thursday at 6PM.

Celt in a Twist - Binge-able Celtic with a new mix each week. Mondays at 7 AM.

Dance Fever - Late-night electronic dance music. Saturdays at 3 AM.

Deep Threes - Music beyond boundaries for a digital world. Sunday at 9 PM.

Democracy Now - International news covering politics, environment and human interest through an independent non-corporate lens. Monday to Friday at 9 AM.

Earshot Daily - A mix of independent music from the Earshot Distribution System. Selected by hosts from across Canada. Monday to Friday at 10:30 AM.

Earshot Top 20 - What's topping the campus-community radio charts in Canada this week? Saturday at 10 AM.

Folk Roots Radio - New releases and interviews with folk, roots, Canadiana, Americana, singer-songwriter and blues artists. Fridays at
11 AM

Freedom Principal - Featuring the newest releases of the African Diaspora, this program sees acoustic ensemble music as a developing world jazz incorporating styles and rhythms which draw from indigenous sources. Tuesdays at 7:30 AM.

Girlie So Groovie - The only show dedicated to the women who rock and the people who love them! Tuesdays at 6 PM.

Groove Concept Radio - A melting pot of musical genres - Nu Jazz, R&B, Soul & Left-Field. Saturdays at 9 PM.

Handi-Link - Handi-Link focuses on disability issues. Host Cam Wells compares similarities and differences between disabled and able bodied life and talks to those from the disabled community. Saturdays at 9:30 AM and rebroadcast on Mondays at 8:30 AM.

Indie Beat - Featuring the best indie Western Canadian music and conversations with the artists who create it! Fridays at 11 AM.

Jazz Boulevard - Jazz Boulevard Radio Show is a weekly award-winning syndicated radio show produced in jazzy Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Friday at Noon.

Julian Taylor's Jukebox - Americana, Funk, Soul and Rock. Sundays at 8 PM.

Latin Waves - Moving forward building healthy communities and positive change. Thursdays at 10 AM.

Lauren Schark - More late-night electronic dance music. Sundays at 1 AM.

Modern Jazz Today - Focus on today’s jazz and its ever-evolving landscape. Sundays at 8 AM.

Terra Informa - A weekly environmental news program covering issues from across Canada & around the world. Tuesdays at 11 AM

Thrash Can - Thrash metal show hosted by Sebastian, featuring fast, heavy and low-tuned tracks with an emphasis on supporting and promoting upcoming metal bands. Wednesdays at 10PM

Radio Ecoshock - Radio Ecoshock offers a variety of environmental news, features, and independent music.

Rabble Radio - Hosted by Breanne Doyle, Rabble Radio breaks down the news of the day from a progressive lens.

WINGS - A weekly radio news and current affairs program by and about women around the world.

World Beat Canada - An exciting one hour, weekly global music alternative to jukebox radio!
