Katimavik at CHLY

Since 2021, CHLY 101.7FM has been a partner in Katimavik, a Canadian youth exchange program founded in 1977! Our station has hosted Katimavik Volunteers from all across Canada. Over the years they have helped with in our Music Department as music librarians intaking and cataloging music for airplay, hosted programs like the VIU Meter, provided voice talent for station ids, program bumpers, and public service announcements (PSAs). Some have also helped with our Summer Radio Camp for Youths! Every Katimavik volunteer at CHLY has contributed in some positive way to our station!

From their website:

“Katimavik offers young adults opportunities to gain life skills and work experience while contributing to community development through volunteerism and employment.

The word ‘Katimavik’ originates from the Inuktitut language, meaning ‘meeting place’. Since 1977, Katimavik has brought young Canadians together to learn, to exchange culture and language, and to help build stronger communities across Canada.

Katimavik aims to help youth become engaged, caring citizens and capable contributors and leaders for a better Canada. We do this through the development of 21st century skills, experiential learning, employment and civic engagement.”

It is wonderful to have their participation at our station!

The Katimacast

Conceived of in 2023 as a fun learning opportunity for Katimavik participants placed at the station, this 28 minute long podcast demo was created by Élodie Talbot and Jesse Woodward. The show interviews Katimavik Volunteers about their experience in the national program, where they come from, what they’re learning, and where they are going. It also features music from all over Canada distributed to CHLY via the Earshot Distribution System with licensing for podcasting.

With approval from the fine folks at Katimavik, this will be a regular ongoing program produced at CHLY 101.7FM for broadcast and podcast!

If you’d like your music featured on the Katimacast, upload it to the Earshot Distribution System and mark it podcast friendly under the licensing when you submit it!

Quotes from past Katimavik Volunteers

When I first joined Katimavik I wasn’t sure what the experience would entail, but volunteering at CHLY 101.7FM was definitely the best case scenario! My time spent doing music intake led to the discovery of some of my now favourite songs. I really love their emphasis on supporting local Canadian artists, which I’ve carried over into my own life. Hosting the VIU Meter was one of the highlights of my Katimavik journey. It allowed me to grow my confidence with public speaking and to further explore my passion for music. What I learnt during my time volunteering at the station has opened the door for me to many cool new opportunities and I definitely can see myself volunteering in radio again!
