Our current approach to AI
The use of artificial intelligence is a disrupting trend that all creative and media industries are contending with today. As of fall 2025, our non-profit station has set interim policy on it’s use within our organization.
Current Policy
Further next steps regarding AI
The NCRA, of which CHLY 101.7FM is a member, has posted a statement on artificial intelligence in our sector that can be found here. Our next steps will be informed by our own policy on AI use, further internal staff and volunteer discussion, and ongoing discussion in the coming years with other campus-community NCRA member stations across Canada.
Practices
On-air use
Use of AI avoided for on-air purposes at our station (ie: no AI-generated music, audio, or voice-overs).
Off-air use
Staff have experimented with AI for draft outlines for internal and external documents. This has not developed into ongoing practice.
Some producers are using software supported by AI for creating transcripts of their programs (ie: Whisper, Otter or Decript). This has continued as the impact of AI for use in transcription is limited, and can be done on local computers using Whisper, free of AI Data Centres, or external training.
