24 Albums of December - SANDRO PERRI - Soft Landing

How on earth are we supposed to select 24 albums representative of Fascinating Rhythm’s 2019? Trust us that it’s an unenviable task, but we’ve given it a good ol’ go. In my opinion this year has been a vintage one for music, so in truth we’d could have picked 100 or even 200 great records all worthy of inclusion. For example, we didn’t include releases by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Lizzo, Deerhunter, Steve Gunn, The National, black midi or Sacred Paws – whose 2019 album I’m still obsessed with. So, there’s a LOT of great stuff we didn’t include, but we’ve done our best to present a span of selections from every area of the store, including some great local and wider Canadian releases. Between now and Christmas Eve, we hope you enjoy the tracks we’ve put together for you.

3/ SANDRO PERRI – Soft Landing.

Hailing from Toronto, Sandro Perri is one of those artists from whom the unexpected should always be expected! His incredible music is exploratory, fascinating and frequently beautiful, with no adherence to any given sound. He used to record under the Italian name Polmo Polpo, which apparently roughly translates to ‘octopus lung.’ Sandro is as well-known as a producer as he is a recording artist, producing an album by my good friend Satnam, who records as My Lovely Son. Since 1990 Sandro has released a ton of stuff, but with this year’s Soft Landing he has truly knocked it out of the park with a gorgeous collection of lush ‘outsider pop.’ As tempting as it is to treat you to the amazing 16-minute opening track, Time (You Got Me), here’s the considerably shorter, but no less rewarding Wrong About the Rain.
