Station Updates from CHLY 101.7FM

CHLY 101.7FM is thrilled to welcome back Joe Pugh as host and producer of its news and current affairs program Midcoast Morning. Joe is taking over the role as current host Lauryn Mackenzie moves into an interim full-time role as an LJI Reporter at CHLY. He previously served as host and producer of an earlier version of Midcoast Morning in the summer of 2021.

On September 1st, 2023, CHLY Station Manager Jesse Woodward was interviewed by CBC Rundown regarding the impact of Meta's social media ban on campus-community radio stations like CHLY in retaliation for Bill C-18, the Online News Act. It was broadcast on CBC News Network.

CHLY 101.7FM is excited for the return of its news and current affairs program Midcoast Morning with the recent hiring of Lauryn Mackenzie as the host and producer of the program. Lauryn returns to CHLY after working this past summer as a junior producer at the station.

Great news for local journalism! You probably read that we recently hired Mick Sweetman as a reporter at CHLY 101.7FM and will be posting a weekly newsletter and eventually local news podcasts. I am excited about this.

Bad news for local journalism. In the coming days or weeks, maybe even today, Meta is going to block access to news on Facebook and Instagram in retribution for Bill C-18, the Online News Act. The Online News Act, based on the "Australian Model", is meant to rectify the financial imbalance between tech giants and news organizations that has developed over the last decade.
