Mariners women's soccer see two victories, men's soccer tilt in tie with Falcons

Soccer

In the world of women’s soccer, the Mariners wrapped up their homestand with a pair of victories against the Langara Falcons. Jada Kamerman and Hannah Wagner scored a combined 5 goals over the weekend, picking up the only two goals in a 2-0 victory on Saturday at Harewood Centennial Park, while scoring the first two goal in Sunday’s 5-0 victory at NDSS. In the second half of Sunday’s game, Kamerman added her second of the game, while Emma Thornton and graduated midfielder Courtney Ingram also recorded a goal each.

On the men’s side, the Mariner’s earned only one point in their weekend tilt with Langara. Connor Nelson scored both VIU’s goal in a 2-2 tie on Saturday that saw midfielder Josh Rayner ejected in the second half. Sunday’s game was less tense, with VIU dropping a 2-0 decision to the Falcons.

Both teams will be back on the road after Thanksgiving weekend to take on the Douglas Royals and Capilano Blues. The Women’s team looks to generate momentum going into the playoffs, while the men’s team fights for points in the playoff race.

Hockey

Hockey fans at VIU once again have reason to be excited, as the Mariners notched their first victory of the season in a comeback win over the Okanagen Lakers. Mariners’ captain Ethan Jones scored two goals and assisted on a Carson Erhardt tally, while goaltender Jeremy Robar stopped 14 of the 18 shots he faced. The Mariners head up the Coquilhalla later this week to take on the Logan Lake Miners on October 10th before a grudge match with Okanagan the next day.

Basketball

Basketball at VIU is right around the corner. The Mariners spend the first two weeks on the mainland, first heading to Kelowna to take on the Okanagen Coyotes before heading down to Abbotsford to face the CBC Bearcats in a long-award grudge match. Their home opener is a week after that, as they return to Nanaimo to take on the Langara Falcons.
