Soccer
Soccer fans at VIU have lots to celebrate! The women’s team won their second straight PACWEST championship following a 2-0 victory over the Douglas Royals. Jada Kamerman scored two goals in the first half, and Kaiden Thorpe stopped every shot she faced.
The Mariners will head to Red Deer next month for the CCAA national championship. They will face the host team, the Red Deer Queens, in the quarterfinals.
Hockey
VIU’s hockey team had a night to remember last Saturday. Eight different players scored for VIU, including Ethan Jones and Davis Sato who had two goals each, as the Mariners thumped the Okanagan Lakers 10-2 in front of a raucous home crowd.
Goaltender Matthew Fleet didn’t have to do much, stopping 13 of the 15 shots he faced. Brandon Modde led the team with four points, three of which were assists.
The Mariners head back up the Interior on October 31st, taking on the Logan Lake Miners and Okanagan Lakers on back to back days.
Basketball
Basketball fans at VIU will finally get to see their team in person on November 1st and 2nd as the Mariners host the Langara Falcons. The women’s team is led by fifth-year guard Mackenzie Cox, while third-year forward Ekman Sohal leads the men.
Saturday’s games tip off at 5 PM and 7 PM, while Sunday’s start times are at 12 PM and 2 PM.
Volleyball
VIU’s volleyball teams did what they do best last week: Beat Camosun. The women had an easier time, winning both games in three sets each, while the men faced a much bigger challenge, nearly blowing a two-set lead to the Chargers on Friday before winning in the fifth set, then downing Camsoun again in four sets the next day.
Both teams are back in action against the COTR Avalanche on October 30th and 31st at 6 PM and 8 PM.
