Longtime Nanaimo resident looking to leave legacy near shore of Westwood Lake
Synopsis
Dr. Lawrence Winkler has consolidated more than eight acres of land close to the shoreline of Westwood Lake with plans to create a Japanese Garden for the public to enjoy. Winkler lives on Arbot Rd. next to the trail around the Lake.
He’s announced the impending purchase of the neighbouring property, currently home to the House of Bread Monastery. Winkler hopes to create a trust that will see the area preserved as an ecological space long after he passes on. He’s reached out to landscape designer Hayato Ogawa, who is currently already working on a pair of other projects in the city of Nanaimo.
Winkler invited Midcoast Morning host Joe Pugh to his home to speak about plans for a Japanese garden.
